The IRS contacts Taxpayers a number of different ways: Certified mail, Notice of Federal Tax Levy, Filing of Federal Tax Lien, Regular Mail, and Telephone. They will never contact you by email and any such attempt should be ignored as it is fraudulent.
If you get a letter from the IRS the most important thing to do is not panic. We are on your side and can help with your tax problems.
The IRS is simply trying to resolve an open issue. Most letters come with a time to respond to the notification. This is why it is extremely important to call us as soon as you receive the letter. If you do not respond in a timely fashion they will put a Federal Tax Lien, or Wage Levy on your paycheck, or levy on your bank account.
When you receive a certified letter in the mail it's serious. This means they were unable to resolve the issue previously and they are ready to begin enforced collection action.
